Risk can come from different directions
Examples include high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid or kidney disease, significant anaemia, multiple pregnancy, previous preterm birth, recurrent pregnancy loss, placental problems or concerns about fetal growth.
Age and previous caesarean birth may affect planning but should not be discussed in isolation. The obstetrician considers the whole history, current pregnancy findings and how risks interact.
- Pre-existing medical conditions
- Previous pregnancy or surgery history
- New maternal, placental or fetal findings
