A normal-feeling eye can still be at risk
Open-angle glaucoma often affects peripheral vision slowly and painlessly. Some people develop damage at statistically normal pressures, while others have high pressure without nerve damage.
Risk may be higher with age, family history, steroid exposure, previous injury, high myopia and certain medical or eye conditions.
What a complete assessment includes
Pressure is one measurement. Optic-nerve examination, drainage-angle assessment, corneal thickness, retinal nerve-fibre imaging and visual fields may also be needed.
Baseline tests allow change to be measured. A normal pressure on one day does not exclude glaucoma.
Treatment protects the future
Daily drops, laser or surgery may lower pressure. The target is personalised to the nerve, disease stage and rate of change.
Use drops consistently, demonstrate technique at review and tell the doctor about breathing or heart conditions and other medicines.
Why glaucoma follow-up is lifelong
Glaucoma damage cannot usually be restored, so treatment is designed to preserve remaining vision. The optic nerve may continue to change without obvious symptoms, which is why pressure checks alone are insufficient. Serial photographs, OCT nerve-fibre scans and visual fields show whether the condition is stable and whether the target pressure should change.
Follow-up frequency depends on disease severity, pressure control, reliability of testing and risk factors. Bring every eye drop to the visit and mention missed doses or side effects honestly. Burning, redness, breathing difficulty, fatigue or cost can affect adherence; an alternative medicine, laser or dosing plan may sometimes be possible.
Using glaucoma drops correctly
One drop is generally enough for each scheduled dose. After instillation, gently closing the eye and pressing the inner corner can reduce drainage into the nose. Leave several minutes between different drops so the second medicine does not wash out the first. Check the label because cap colour alone is not a safe identifier.
Steroid eye drops can raise eye pressure in susceptible people, including when prescribed for allergy or used after another procedure. Tell every doctor that you have glaucoma and do not restart an old steroid without supervision. Family members may also benefit from a comprehensive examination because some glaucoma types cluster in families.
Laser and glaucoma surgery decisions
Laser treatment can improve drainage or reduce fluid production in selected glaucoma types, while operations create or implant another drainage pathway. These approaches may reduce pressure or dependence on drops but do not restore damaged vision. The choice depends on the drainage angle, disease stage, previous surgery and target pressure. After any procedure, scheduled reviews remain essential because pressure can change even when the eye feels comfortable.

Can glaucoma occur with normal eye pressure?+
Yes. Some optic nerves are damaged at pressures within the statistical normal range. Diagnosis uses the nerve appearance, visual field and other measurements—not one pressure reading.
Can glaucoma blindness be reversed?+
Established optic-nerve loss is usually permanent. Early detection and consistent treatment aim to slow or stop further damage before central vision is affected.
Do glaucoma drops have to be used forever?+
Many patients need long-term pressure control. The method may change between drops, laser and surgery, but treatment should never be stopped without the treating ophthalmologist’s advice.
